Depression Set In? What Do You Do?
Are you are depressed all of the time? Don't know why? Then you should seek out a mental health professional and see if you can find a way to get to the bottom of your depression. Your inner feelings could be something serious such as chronic depression or bipolar disorder.
Bipolar disorder strikes more women than men every year. It is often a series of rapid cycling between mania and the deepest and darkest elements of depression. What makes matters worse with this disorder is that people don't realize why they are depressed. Because they can't seem to pin point the cause, they simply push it aside in their minds and accept it. This enables chronic depression to get the upper hand in the depressed individual's life.
Although you may want to understand why you are so depressed and the cause of your depression, it may be more important to recognize if you have a deeper problem such as bipolar disorder. Or, you may have another form of chronic depression which is causing you to lose time from work and miss out on a great part of life and your family.
Once you are diagnosed for depression, you will find that the medication to treat depression will be helpful. You may find that you will need to try more than one medication to find the one that works best in your specific case. Not every medication always works right off the bat or with immediate gratifying results. With some individuals, medication is not an answer to the problem. Unfortunately, for these individuals, other treatments will have to be relied upon. Depression will take a while to control depending upon your particular case. Bipolar disorder is one that is especially hard to overcome and will not be contained at once.
Taking an active part in your treatment is fundamental in order for you to be successful in overcoming your disorder. You should seek support from a spouse, family members, or a close friend to aid you. They can aid you so that you will always be in control of your bipolar disorder or your depression. While it is important to talk to therapists and psychologists, it is also very important to find the right person to confide in. Make sure it is someone that you know well and trust.
If you don't have a trusted friend, then maybe you should consider joining a support group. A support group will enable you to talk freely and openly about your chronic depression. While you may not think so or realize it right off the bat, you are more likely have a larger support group to use in your in your family. Close family members that understand your problem and are willing to listen are great to help you get your life back on track.
There are times when family is not an aid. Your depression may interfere with your family and talking to family members may be disruptive. Depression tends to be a tedious subject for family members. It is constantly on your mind, but not on theirs. They don't always want to be remined of your condition. This is especially true at holidays. Dinner parties can be be ruined by you blurting out how miserable you feel and how your life is a total failure. I would consider professional help or support groups a more viable alternative and family as a last resort (and only if they express that they are seriously willing to help).
Read everything you can about your depression. It is best to be in the know. Choose book and article titles specific to bipolar disorder if that is what your diagnosis is. Make sure that you understand the key terms in bipolar disorder such as mania, rapid cycling, and all the other key terms that you will hear a lot in your therapy sessions.
Talk openly and honestly to your mental health therapist. You can't be helped properly without being honest about your condition. Make sure that you and your therapist are in the same mindset when it comes to ideas about your treatment. Don't settle for a treatment scheme that you don't understand, and more importantly, a treatment you don't want to follow. There are many options open to you when it comes to your own mental health.
Take the offensive and go over all of these when you discuss your options with your therapist. Take control of your chronic depression and choose to live a better life with you being in complete and total control over your disease. You can make your life better and more healthy by just starting today.
