Teen Anxiety - A Rising Crisis
by Jim Bruce
Anxiety is a part of life that everyone feels at times. This can be good or bad, depending on the situation and how anxious feelings are dealt with. The fact is that more and more teens today are finding their anxiety becomes overwhelming for them.
What is teen anxiety? General anxiety means you worry, feel stress, concern, or nervousness. Sometimes even a panic attack might overcome a person. For many of teens, anxiety is only felt during situations that involve increased stress such as before taking an important exam, or while waiting for that all important date. It is when the level of anxiety increases and interferes with the ability to function normally in daily life that problems arise.
Today, teens are facing more challenges in life and stress caused by their fast paced lifestyles than ever before. Teens have always faced challenges and worries. In their minds, worries such as whether they will do well on a test or whether the right person will be willing to date them can be overwhelming.
But today, there are so many unique, new challenges that face teens which can make them fall into an anxiety pattern. Will I get into a college or the right college? Will I be safe from crime in my neighborhood? Will someone shoot me while on the way to school? These new worries have put teenage anxiety on the rise. These challenges were not faced on the same level by teens in the past generations.
A teen who is experiencing anxiety should not be considered crazy! But they may feel as if they are going crazy. If the teen anxiety has developed to the point that the teen is unable to function normally, they may have developed an anxiety disorder. Such disorders can be treated successfully by trained medical professionals such as psychologists, psychiatrists, and mental health therapists. Left untreated, anxiety can lead to depression and in extreme cases, suicide.
A teenager in the family undergoing anxiety disorders can cause tension in the family setting and leave a family devastated. Early diagnosis and treatment is the best way to keep the tension within the family to a minimum and cause the least disruption of your family life.
There are several different types of anxiety disorders, all of which can affect your teenager. All of these ailments respond to therapy once diagnosed by a qualified professional. Sometimes these disorders also require prescribed medication. Proper treatments will allow a teen with an anxiety disorder to be productive and live a happy, normal life.
